Honor Rock
Story of the Honor Rock

The stone is New England granite and was found within a sand pit where it had rested since the last ice age. Roughly six feet long, two feet thick, and three feet high, it weighs 4,460 pounds.

The rock was excavated by Barnicoat Monuments near Middleboro, Massachusetts. Jack Barnicoat, owner of the company, carved the word "HONOR' using a sandblaster to form the letters to a depth of one-half inch. A "V" shaped hydraulic chisel then deepened the letters into Roman-style lettering.

Activities

School organizations include drum and bugle corps, Scholastic Honor Society, dance committee, school newspaper, drama club, yearbook, glee club, weight lifting club, ski club, and Christian Athletes Society. Many students take piano lessons.

Additional activities include debating, declamation, hiking, and JROTC activities such as military police, raiders (military skills), color guard and drill team. Social events include formal and informal dances (including the military ball), outside entertainment programs, alumni homecoming, two parents' days, an overnight camping trip to Camp Carson, plays presented by cadets, a military "Dining In," and trips to Philadelphia, Lancaster, Hershey, Gettysburg, and Wahington, D.C., and to movies in the vicinity of Harrisburg.

Cadets may volunteer for community service to rake leaves or shovel snow for senior citizens.

Weekend Life

The school has a liberal policy on town permission. Unless a student is on restriction, he is permitted to walk into town two times a week. Off-campus movie trips are scheduled at least once a month. Each dormitory dayroom has its own television and VCR. The school selects and provides appropriate movies for weekend student viewing.

Dances are held about every three weeks. There are exchange dances with two independent girls' schools that are within approximately 50 miles of the campus.
Interscholastic and intramural athletic games are sometimes played on Saturday afternoon. Since the school is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, hiking is a very popular weekend activity.
